Mt. Edwards Skiing 6/1/2011
A year ago, I climbed and skied Kelso Mountain with Lacy, and got a great look at the north side of Mt. Edwards, which holds a series of aesthetic couloirs. Lou Dawson says of these "They are called the Remarkables, because they are." So when Mike Records suggested that we ski them, I was immediately game.
Normally by early June, a 4WD vehicle should be able to make it most of the way up the Stevens Gulch Road to the summer trailhead. However, this is not a normal year. Fortunately, Mike has a snowmobile. We parked the truck about 100 yards up from the winter lot, and switched over to the sled. A fast but slightly sketchy sled ride (involving driving the sled on quite a bit of dirt) dropped us at the base of Edwards' north face. One bonus of using the sled is that you can travel past the summer trailhead and cut out about a 1-1.5 miles of skinning.
See Mike's photos and report on his blog, Powder & Patagucci.
