Quandary Peak Skiing 4/14/2010
Sadly, I could not motivate anyone to go backcountry skiing with me... so I decided to drive up to Summit County, sleep at the trailhead, and solo Quandary Peak (14,265').
It was an ideal day to get into the alpine. The forecast was for a cold night (hard freeze, even below treeline), then a warm sunny day. The avalanche danger above treeline was finally LOW on all aspects after a season of mostly considerable or high. Quandary is a good peak to solo because 1) there's always other people up there, even on weekdays in April, 2) there's a great ski line on the south face (Cristo Couloir) but 3) if that looks too dangerous, you can ski back down the east ridge with virtually no avalanche risk at all.
